A journey to Eataly

Culinary tradition and Italian… A journey to Eataly

This is the third year that our students have been experiencing a journey among Italian culinary and food in relation with Italian Language Week.

We were the guests of Eataly in Zorlu Center on October 21. This was an informative activity called “We speak as we eat” for children to realize the importance of holidays and traditions and how food takes substantial part during these special days.

“We speak as we eat”... Meaning with feelings, care, taste, imagination and creativity.. Nutrition is not only a matter of food consumption but also a sign of research, care and respect.

On Friday, we took off for a genuine journey to the enthusiastic world of Italian Culinary with our 79 students from primary and secondary school. During our expedition, our guides shared lots of information such as when and how to consume vegetables and fruits in the healthiest way, the process of food and how they are protected.

Students had the chance to see many different types of cheese and pasta, fish and meat, vegetables and fruit, olive oil and bread. They felt the smooth texture of the fresh handmade ravioli. It was very exciting to taste the fresh mozzarella just out of its mold. The most important common point of everything they tasted was that they were organic and all the ingredients were from Italy.

And later “Dulcis in fundo”… we sat at our tables and enjoyed our pizza margarita made of mozzarella and basil along with homemade Italian lemonades. After having our pizzas we completed our journey with our young explorers tasting ice-creams made of milk from Italian Alps.

Through this enjoyable and informative trip our students had the chance to learn more about Italian culture and improved their vocabulary skills. They learned about ingredients and how to match food for making delicious Italian recipes. They also realized that Italians have Mediterranean traditions just like Turkish people and Italian and Turkish Cuisine have so much in common as they enjoyed the day.

There was Italian and Turkish unity at the students’ tables as they had their “tricolor” pizzas with mozzarella, basil and tomatoes just like the Italian flag. They laughed, they chatted, they ordered in Italian “Ancora pizza!” and they had so much fun.

We returned back to school after lunch and continued to our lessons knowing that everything we shared on this day would be a “special memory” in our minds.
